8:30am - 10:00am - Julie Proscia, Equity Partner, Labor and Employment Practice Group - Amundsen Davis Law

PROGRAM SPEAKER CHANGE as of 8/21/23

In this session, Julie will present a review of the new Illinois Paid Leave Act and the new federal Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA). During the presentation, Julie will give an overview of each of these new Acts, offering guidance on how to be compliant and how to avoid pitfalls that can occur. It will be an interactive conversation and questions will be encouraged to help you better understand how employers are affected.

    Julie's bio:

Julie provides labor and employment counsel that is outcome based. Before giving advice, she asks her clients what they want or need as the outcome to their matter; then skillfully crafts pragmatic, business-centric solutions to the issue. Julie actively navigates employers of all shapes and sizes through the legal pitfalls of the employment relationship from its inception at recruitment and hiring through the implementation of policies and procedures, and the conclusion of the relationship with the termination/separation process. When litigation becomes necessary, Julie aggressively advocates for clients in the areas of traditional labor and employment law, including but not limited to discrimination/retaliation cases, non-competition/non-solicitation enforcement, wage and hour litigation, and employment and labor arbitrations. Julie also represents many public sector/municipal entities in traditional labor and employment issues. Most commonly, her public sector practice involves traditional labor disputes, including negotiations, grievances, ULP defense, and arbitration. Her impressive legal practice includes representing both public and private sector employers in federal, state and administrative venues. These venues include a trial practice in federal and state court, as well as at the Illinois Human Rights Commission, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, National Labor Relations Board and Department of Labor.

10:00am - 10:15am - Break - continental breakfast and snacks will be provided
    10:15am - 11:45am - Nola Cartmill - "DEI 101: What, why and how?"

Although diversity, equity and inclusion (DEi) are commonly talked about, there are still many misconceptions about what DEi means and entails, particularly the difference between equity and equality. In this session, participants will learn about the key concepts related to DEi initiatives, the importance and benefits of DEi, and how they can activate DEi both as an individual and within their organization.

    Learning Objectives:

    •    Recognize common DEi terms.
    •    Differentiate equity from equality.
    •    Learn why DEi is important for organizations.
    •    Explore strategies and actionable ways to create more diverse, equitable, and inclusive environments
